Pedestrian View Of Los Angeles

This blog focuses on rail lines in LA country that exist, are under construction or under consideration. The Californian high-speed rail project and southern CA to Vegas project will also be covered. Since most of the relevant developments in the news, rail websites and blogosphere take place on weekdays, this blog will be updated primarily Monday through Friday and occasionally on the weekends. Your comments, criticism and suggestions are encouraged. Miscellaneous stuff will also appear here.

What is the 30/10 Initiative?

From metro.net: http://www.metro.net/projects/30-10/

Simply stated, 30/10 means accomplishing 30 years’ worth of transit projects in just 10 years.

The 30/10 Initiative would accelerate construction of 12 key Metro expansion projects -- originally scheduled to be built over three decades -- and complete them by 2019. While the local share of funding for these projects will be collected over the next 30 years through the Measure R sales tax, the 30/10 Initiative asks Congress to advance that money now so the projects can be built much faster.

Benefits include generating hundreds of thousands of construction and other jobs to improve the local economy, reducing greenhouse emissions and easing traffic congestion.

Accelerating construction will also result in substantial cost savings by beating inflation on labor and materials, and by taking advantage of competitive construction bids in the current depressed industry. When added to an annual reduction of 568,000 pounds of mobile source pollution emissions, 10.3 million fewer gallons of gasoline used, 77 million more transit boardings and 208 million fewer vehicle miles traveled annually, the 30/10 Initiative is both an unprecedented step forward for LA County and a model of progress for the entire nation.
