Pedestrian View Of Los Angeles

This blog focuses on rail lines in LA country that exist, are under construction or under consideration. The Californian high-speed rail project and southern CA to Vegas project will also be covered. Since most of the relevant developments in the news, rail websites and blogosphere take place on weekdays, this blog will be updated primarily Monday through Friday and occasionally on the weekends. Your comments, criticism and suggestions are encouraged. Miscellaneous stuff will also appear here.

Some interesting photos

www.woot.com

A recent discovery:
What is Woot and who's behind it?
Woot.com is an online store and community that focuses on selling cool stuff cheap. It started as an employee-store slash market-testing type of place for an electronics distributor, but it's taken on a life of its own. We anticipate profitability by 2043 – by then we should be retired; someone smarter might take over and jack up the prices. Until then, we're still the lovable scamps we've always been. But don't take our word for it: see what the online community has to say at this Wikipedia article.
And, of course, today's mystery link:

Transitions: weather, X-mas and place

In these series of photos, first is a group of photos showing the first (?) fog signaling that winter is in its way. The second is the first X-mas decorations I have seen this year. The third is where a movie house had been in Westwood, CA. This lot hadn't been seen in probably decades nor the walls of the adjacent building.

A Walk Home Along Wilshire

I took a walk this morning on Wilshire Boulevard. It's been changing a lot after a number of years of little change. Three vacant lots are now filled with high rises and many of the low density, short buildings are slowly being replaced by high-density high rises. I tried to capture a little of this change by showing places where construction is taking place. All this charges goes forward as if the slowdown doesn't exist. Obviously, these changes reflect the plannning and financing from an earlier point when the real estate market was still robust...

A ride to and from the city on an Autumn day.

I haven't put anything up for a number of months. So,this is my first posting since June. I went to the Hollywood area this weekend.
  • As I got out of the red line station, a premiere was taking place. I saw it through dirty windows on the bus and took photos to see how it'd come out.
  • The rest are of my trip back to the valley on the LA metro system. I took a few photos that show how:
  • little the Autumn can be seen here in the trees, how complicated street signs are and view of Hollywood that will change with the new construction taking place.
Here is the link. Just left-click on the photo.

Summer is around the corner and the sky is no longer blue.

Around late May to early June, the temperature rises creating an inversion layer composed primarily of car exhaust. In the following, you can see the seasonal change of the sky's color from blue to brown.

Changing Faces of Downtown Los Angeles

I am presenting photos of the different parts of downtown Los Angeles taken over the last three years. There was no deliberate attempt to document these changes. I just took them on visits as I saw the changes. The first set center on the new headquarters for the L.A.P.D. These are before it was built. The new headquarters is nearing completion as of 5/28/2008.

Overview of the area where the new headquarters of the LAPD will be.

Looking south from City Hall.

Facing South from city hall on the lawn.

On Main St. facing west. A view that no longer exists.

On Main St. a little further north than the previous photo.

Super Bowl Sunday at Venice Beach

This was the last shot of the day in Venice. I am new to digital photography. Nighttime and indoors are
a lot harder; film was easier. Any suggestions?

In all the years of going to Venice beach, I have never seen it this empty or windy.

This was at the end of the day at Venice Beach; it was cold. This bird found shelter from the wind here.
