Wilshire Bus Lane Project Could be Completed by 2013
The Los Angeles City Council today will decide to direct staff to lay out detailed plans and needs to ensure that the Wilshire Boulevard Bus-Only Lanes Project--dedicated peak-hour lanes between Santa Monica and the Pico-Union neighborhood--becomes a reality in a few years.
At a committee meeting on Wednesday, city transportation staff told councilmembers that construction could began as early as Spring 2011 and take about two years to complete. They warned, however, that staffing shortages in the city's Bureau of Street Services could delay the project because of curb lane re-construction in the Mid-City area.
Staff also reported some changes to the original project. In the Comstock Hills area between Beverly Hills and Westwood (the nickname is "Condo Canyon"), curb cut-outs and curbside parking will be preserved in response to community concern.
The project was originally touted to improve bus speeds by about 25%, but at the meeting a Metro representative said 20%. Staff will have 90 days to deliver a detailed plan, if approved by Council. The Beverly Hills and Santa Monica portions of Wilshire Boulevard will not be improved for this project.
