BHUSD Seeks Court Order for MTA Documents

The school district says the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is dragging its heels in releasing requested subway information regarding contested expansion route for Century City.

The Beverly Hills Unified School District filed a petition Monday seeking a court order compelling the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to release technical information on tunneling and station locations related to the Westside Subway Extension.

In a petition filed with Los Angeles County Superior Court, the BHUSD alleges that MTA officials have violated the California Public Records Act by improperly withholding public documents requested by the BHUSD over a period of several months. As Patch has reported, the BHUSD opposes an MTA proposal to possibly tunnel under Beverly Hills High in order to place a Century City subway stop on Constellation Boulevard.

“[The] MTA has not been forthcoming with a full production of documents or copies of the ongoing studies which MTA promised it would produce in response to BHUSD requests,” the 36-page petition says in part.

Metro is considering several locations for the Century City stop, and the MTA board is scheduled to make a final decision by August. The BHUSD and most city officials favor a subway route that would go underneath Santa Monica Boulevard to a stop at Avenue of the Stars in Century City, while an alternate Metro proposal would tunnel under BHHS to arrive at Constellation Boulevard.

“We tried to work with the MTA, but they chose to ignore or reject our numerous requests for information,” Board of Education President Lisa Korbatov said in a statement posted oncenturycitysubway.org, a website organized by the BHUSD.

Drill rigs and hard hats are popping up at a few Los Angeles intersections this week. KPCC’s Brian Watt says L.A. Metro is testing the ground for the proposed Westside Subway Extension.

This is the latest item on L.A. Metro’s long to-do list for the subway to the sea – taking underground soil samples for an environmental impact report.

Crews plan to start digging today at the intersection of Highland and Selma avenues. They’ll begin tomorrow at Santa Monica Boulevard and Avenue of the Stars, and on Thursday at Wilshire Boulevard and Detroit Street.

The drilling in each spot goes from 9 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon for three weekdays.

It will block off the parking lane and up to one traffic lane in each area. People nearby should expect some noise and a little vibration from the drilling. L.A. Metro is looking at extending its Purple Line along Wilshire Boulevard to the city of Santa Monica and an extension west from the Hollywood/Highland subway stop via Santa Monica Boulevard.

WILSHIRE BLVD: Many complain that the subway to the sea is a far-off reality. Well, courtesy of Metro, photo evidence that drilling has already started—though it's for soil-testing rather than installing tunnels at this point. The photo shows drilling near Wilshire and Fairfax, the likely terminus of the first leg of the Purple Line extension, and according to an article in the Beverly Press, Santa Monica Boulevard is being drilled too for a possible WeHo subway spur. And more Wilshire drilling is happening this weekend and next week, according to LAist.com. [BP/Metro]
